Absurd Food Rules That Still Exist – 007

In episode 7 of The Ali Damron Show, I discussed some food rules that we still hear frequently that either no longer apply due to scientific research that show otherwise or that maybe we just need to challenge their credibility.

  1.  Eat Low Fat.  Consuming fat doesn’t make you fat.  Research now shows that weight loss has to do with calorie consumption and needs, macronutrient ratios, gut health and hormones – not the amount of fat in the diet.  Fat in our diet is essential for cholesterol (LDL), brain health, hormones and energy.
  2. Don’t eat carbohydrates.  Complex carbohydrates are an important macronutrient for our health for functions like energy, glucose for our brain, glycogen for our muscles and liver and for muscle refueling and recovery after intense workouts.  Choose the right carbohydrates, such as fruit, veggies, and sprouted grains for the benefits from carbohydrates.
  3. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  I practice intermittent fasting several times a week and there is a plethora of research that shows how beneficial it is for our bodies to go into “digestive rest.” It helps improve gut healthy and metabolism, it encourages your body to burn excess fat for fuel and has a whole lot of other health benefits ranging from neurodegenerative disease protection to increased insulin sensitivity.
  4. Eat 5-6 mini meals per day.  Eating this many meals per day doesn’t increase your metabolism.  Your metabolism metabolizes 2-3 meals per day the same way it does 5-6 meals per day.  This is a personal preference thing – not a necessity to eat that frequently.

I also talked about things to do relating to your food.  I got this list from the Book “Food Rules” by Michael Pollen.

  1.  Don’t eat anything your great-grandma wouldn’t recognize as food.
  2. Don’t eat anything with more than 5 ingredients or ingredients that you can’t pronounce.
  3. Shop the perimeter of the store.
  4. Don’t eat anything that won’t rot – the exception being honey.
  5. Don’t buy food where you can gasoline.  In this U.S. 20% of food is eaten in the car.  Choose to pack food for you and avoid purchasing food at convenience stores.
